A Horrified Mother is the Best Barometer for A Creative Life.
When my mom says "That's interesting," it actually means she hates it and then I know I"m on the right track.
Welcome to The Nibbler by me, Jill Myer, a bi-weekly brief focusing on art, inspiration, creativity, snacks, and joy.
Good morning, Nibblers
Happy Toodly Tuesday!
Mother Trucker (my mom) has been here visiting this last week while my dad (Papa T) and husband (Matt, who needs a much better nickname) have been partying their asses off in Mexico.
I’d be insanely jealous if it weren’t for the fact that I’d rather take a hot poker to the eye than attend a 4-day Phish concert.
Mom and I have been toodling about, walking on the beach, taking back roads, and scenic detours seeing all the beautiful sights of the Oregon coast.
We’ve also been visiting art galleries, coastal candy shops, and testing the strength of my gag reflex by exploring the darkest, mustiest, dustiest, dankest depths of places that claim anything made by Disney, is missing an eye, or is yellowed with age is an antique.
In other exciting news!!!
”The Mermaid of Lake Superior” is out now and available for purchase!
I painted the cover and illustrated the inside images. It was a fun project to work on especially since it was with one of my all time favorite people.
The pink bear viewing glitter queen herself Aurora Lothbrok
I wrote a short blog post about the start of this project back in July of 2022 - that’s how long it takes for a book to come to life!! I can’t wait for her to start on her second book, so I can begin the illustrations on that one as well!
ON THE BLOG / VLOG
A Horrified Mother is the Best Barometer for A Creative Life.
In the last few weeks and blog posts, I've been exploring how to bring joy back into my artistic practice after allowing the need to sell my art to kill my creative vibe.
I'm excited to declare from the top of a tall building, hands on hips, cape billowing out behind me - that I've found a path forward, AND my mother is horrified.
Two birds, one stone.

MY FAVORITE SNACK
Dark Chocolate Sea Foam
I acquired this delicacy at the Chocolate Frog in Lincoln City - we’ve been to A LOT of shops in the last week, but I’d go back to the Chocolate Frog in a heartbeat!
This stuff is yummy. I’m sure I’ve had it before but it was never as memorable as the morsel I got at the Chocolate Frog!!
TODAY I LEARNED
The value of having a stack of really cheap watercolor paper on hand!
There is so much freedom in allowing oneself to play and destroy and not be so darn precious about materials and art supplies.
I inherited this pad of paper, and I’ve been blowing through it, using it for all kinds of random things.
Again, with the theme of freedom (see blog post), it feels good to let go of so much angst and pent-up energy over getting things just right, especially when all the rules are made up anyway.
SHOP
Prints and original encaustics are available in the shop.
These beauties are hanging in the For Art Sake gallery for March and April - so please pop in to see them if you are in town!
I'm so proud of them (now)! They are featured in this week's blog post for a more in-depth view of them.
Available in the For ArtSake Gallery here in Newport or via email!
