A Self-Assigned Artist Residency: Illustrations of Recovery
Alternate Title: When the Walls Are Melting, How do you Stay Sane? Also we did it!! Roxy is A-OK!!!
Welcome to The Nibbler by me, Jill Myer, a bi-weekly brief focusing on art, inspiration, creativity, snacks, and joy.
Hello, my Warm Buttered Biscuits,
Happy Tuesday!
I am so excited to share this week’s issue of The Nibbler with you!
I’ve been busy - well as busy as one can be on week 8 of doggie rehab. Rehab is going so well, we are taking longer walks and have every expectation that Roxy will be released for full activity at our next vet appointment. Woohooo!!!
But cross your fingers and toes for us - Just in case.
The above is exciting for all involved, but I am even more excited to share my sketchbook with you.
But first why exactly?!
In the first week of Roxy’s recovery I saw a post by writer and artist
Like all magical things the timing of the post was SPOT ON!
So without further ado I present a record of Roxy’s Recovery as drawn by me.

A Self-Assigned Artist Residency: Illustrations of Recovery
First, let me assure you there is no gore in these drawings. In fact, there are very few drawings of Roxy because I swear she knows when I'm attempting to draw her, and she always moves.
About three or four days into our kitchen camping adventure, I read a post on Substack by Amy Stewart, who presented the most lovely idea.
If you are an artist, plan to become one, or even own a pencil, I would encourage you to subscribe to her Substack or, at the very least, read the post linked below on creating one's own artist residency - after you finish The Nibbler, obviously.
For those of you who have broken thumbs and don't have the energy or the fucks to give to follow the above links - an artist residency is generally two weeks—sometimes up to a year—in a specific place—a lighthouse, a museum, an observatory, botanical gardens, castles, really anywhere that might prove inspiring.
One of the goals of a residency is to … click it!!! There are so many photos!! ⤵️
MY CURRENT FAVORITE SNACK
Fresh fall apples directly from the tree dipped in peanut butter!!
But like, EXTRA salty peanut butter!! So good!!
TODAY I LEARNED…
I still LOVE cutting things out of paper.
My mom says that when I was little, she could set me up with a stack of magazines and a pair of scissors and I’d keep myself occupied for hours.
The other key to my sanity in the last 8 weeks has been Skillshare I’ve started watching Skillshare like it’s regular TV. Because the regular TV is not in the kitchen, and you really can only watch so many Reels.
I’ve been binging all the classes by Tom Froese, most recently “Odd Bodies”. His classes are so well done and very informative.
Another fun one was “Oil Pastels Boot Camp” by Jen Dickson.
One of my all-time favorite instructors is
Lisa Glanz - she teaches courses on Illustration, Procreate App, and has produced all of my favorite iPad / Procreate brushes - all the best textures.
AND get this!!!
From the Skillshare website -
” When you refer a friend to join Skillshare, they get 1 Month Free and 20% off their first payment. Plus, when your friend subscribes and maintains their paid subscription, you’ll receive a $35 prepaid gift card!”

Which is to say - if you subscribe to Skillshare using this link ⬆️, you will get a discount and I will get a wee little kickback which I will use to continue fueling my productivity addiction.
IN MY STUDIO
I ordered a boat ton of new art supplies the other day - sincerely I cannot be trusted with a fat gallery commission check and an Internet connection.
In my own defense part of this art supplies haul was to replace some of the paints that got used in making this large (24x18 in) painting. It’s the last of my ponds and reflections series.
It is hanging in the For Artsake Gallery on The BIG wall!! (so fancy).
