Welcome to The Nibbler by me, Jill Myer, a bi-weekly brief focusing on art, inspiration, creativity, snacks, and joy.
Good morning, Nibblers!
Happy Tuesday!
As I write to you today, rain is lightly misting against the windows, Roxy is snoring softly in the background, and I’ve got mellow music playing to dampen the sounds of the outside world.
A lap blanket made of Matt’s old concert tee shirts covers my feet, and I’ve got a steaming cup of Night on Glacier Bay tea sitting at my elbow (but not in a dangerous location, a convenient one). A nap is imminent because the weather suggests it’s the only course of action for the day.
Welcome to this space of ultimate calm.
I’m so glad to be able to share it with you.
Roxy and I have spent the last three weeks in a cocoon of quiet solitude while Matt has been in Africa (yes, you read that right), embarking on the trek he has been training for all summer and planning since 2018.
He made it to the top of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at 19,300 ft., and I could not be more proud of him; such a huge accomplishment for him.
In this week's blog, I explore what having three weeks with few commitments and almost no interruptions has done for my artistic practice.

Lessons in Solitude
…so there we were, Roxy and I, on our own for three solid weeks. I can’t recall a time that I’ve had more than a few days to myself in a long time, so three weeks felt substantial. And I was ready to steep in some alone time like a gas station tea bag steeps in the bottom of a 20oz paper cup for the entire day.
The following is what I learned during this time.
#1 Thankfully and gratefully, I very much enjoy my own company. However, if I didn’t have Roxy to discuss the finer points of life with, I think I would not be as happy to spend time alone.

MY FAVORITE SNACK
Matt is the chef in our household. He was concerned about what I would eat while he was gone. I told him not to worry. There was a box of Lucky Charms in the pantry. I thought he would pass out from sheer frustration and annoyance with me, haha.
I did cook for myself, but only once a week. I’ve got things to paint.
Mine was not as pretty as the photo, but it was yummy and oh-so-filling! I think I’ll try a broccoli cheddar version OR a caramelized onion and blue cheese for my next one!
There are several recipes online, this is the one I used.

TODAY I LEARNED
Tomorrow is Not Your Friend by Mini Habits.
This article hit home for me. I rely on tomorrow too frequently, or at least after reading this, I realized I use tomorrow too often.
I found this link in the daily newsletter For The Interested by Josh Spector.
SHOP
I’ve added these fun little mini mushroom cards to my shop! The bundle comes with six mini-cards and six kraft brown mini-envelopes (3x3 inches)
