The Sun is Never Not Shining
Also, rainbows, donuts, and situational cheese. If I ever start a band it will be called "Situational Cheese".
Welcome to The Nibbler by me, Jill Myer, a bi-weekly brief focusing on art, inspiration, creativity, snacks, and joy.
Hello, my Perfectly Pink Champagne Infused Cake Slices,
✨Happy NEW YEAR!✨
On this New Year’s Eve I hope that you had a beautiful 2024 and that you are delighted to welcome in 2025.
My word of the year for 2025 is “less”.
I plan to do less, to be less places, to stress less, and to attempt less.
Which is at odds with my norm becasue there is SO MUCH I want to do, like SO MUCH!!!
But in attempting to do all the things all the time, I’m finding that I’m not enjoying the things - so here is to more merry-go-round and less rollercoaster in 2025!
ON THE BLOG
The Sun is Never Not Shining
The other day, after many, many, many days of rain, the clouds cleared, and the sun came out in full force.
I could feel the warmth through my clothes on my body!
The dramatic change shook me.
I had emotionally prepared for a lot of gray. The weather forecast had called for many additional weeks of dismal dripping rain - or winter in the PNW.
But as I was peeling my eyes open like a mole emerging from an underground hole to the bright rays of sunshine, I had an ah ha moment. The sun is, in fact, always shining, even at night.
Somewhere, the sun shines.
As long as the sun exists - the sun is shining.
Even when it's cloudy, cold, damp, and downright miserable where I am, the sun is shining somewhere else.
It is only the time of day or the thickness of the clouds between me and the giant celestial ball of fire and rock that creates gray skies and a blustery sea.
MY CURRENT FAVORITE SNACK
In my gluten-filled past, a favorite snacks was a sleeve of six mini donuts - the powdered sugar ones. The chocolate ones taste liked candle wax. And, no, we don’t need any further discussion on how or why I know what candle wax tastes like.
I was young and I’ll never forget the flavor.
To my absolute delight, I discovered that these frozen donuts taste exactly like Hostess Gems.
I will admit that I am particularly enthralled with hot powdered sugar, so take my opinion for what it is, but I’m super happy with these!
GLIMMER HUNTING…
This whisper of a rainbow. It was trying so hard!
And also this meme speaks to my soul!
IN MY STUDIO
I’m testing a technique I observed on Instagram. I’d love to tell you the artist’s name, but I’ve lost them in the endless scroll.
This artist’s process involves ink pen sketches, followed by a layer of transparent ink, and finally a painting.
I loved the way the paint popped against the ink wash, so I decided to give it a go.
I started this painting with an orange ink layer to see what would happen. The orange has had some super interesting effects on the color - such as the yellow ochre at the bottom looks more green than yellow.
I am also using this opportunity to experiment with using palette knives to paint with. I love the look of palette knife paintings and the texture this technique creates.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
